Few drinks have ever carried so much cultural baggage in such a small glass.

The martini has been glamorous, old-fashioned, corporate, cinematic, minimalist and occasionally ridiculous. It has survived endless variations while never losing the basic silhouette: clear liquid, cold glass, olive or twist.

Now it is once again everywhere.

## **A drink that looks simple**

The martini's appeal begins with reduction.

Gin or vodka, vermouth and garnish leave very little room to hide. Temperature matters. Dilution matters. The choice and quantity of vermouth matter. Even the glass matters because the drink warms quickly.

A complicated cocktail can impress through ingredients. A martini has to impress through execution.

That makes it unusually compatible with the current return to classic hospitality.

## **The end of cocktail maximalism**

For years, serious cocktail bars became increasingly elaborate.

Menus told stories. Drinks arrived in custom vessels, surrounded by smoke, foam, unusual ice and ingredients produced through techniques borrowed from kitchens.

Much of that experimentation was exciting. It also created a natural desire for the opposite.

Ordering a martini removes most of the explanation. The customer already understands the basic idea, leaving the bar to demonstrate its personality through small adjustments.

This is luxury by editing rather than addition.

## **Ritual matters**

The martini also benefits from theatre that does not feel invented.

The chilled glass. The mixing vessel. The controlled stirring. The twist expressed over the surface or the olive dropped at the end.

These gestures existed long before hospitality became obsessed with creating shareable moments.

Perhaps that is why they still feel convincing.

The ritual serves the drink.

## **A perfect object for the current mood**

The martini also occupies an interesting position between formality and informality.

It can belong to a hotel bar in London, a tiny restaurant in Paris or an intentionally rough downtown counter. The glass communicates sophistication while the drink itself remains remarkably direct.

That adaptability explains part of its return.

After years in which cocktails competed to become more surprising, the martini offers confidence through familiarity.

Nothing about it needs to be reinvented.

It simply needs to be very, very cold.
